VANCOUVER, WA—The Vancouver Victory are pleased to announce that Sean Janson (Clark College Bio) will return to the club in 2015, this time as the goalkeeping coach. Last season Sean was an assistant coach under Biniam Afenegus. In 2015 the Victory have a new head coach in Aaron Lewis. Janson joins assistant coach Alex Nimo on the Victory staff.
Janson learned a lot in Vancouver’s first season in the Evergreen Premier League. “The substitution pattern was new to me last year, I’ve got a good handle on that now and will counsel coach Lewis this year. Also learned you never know what to expect from any team. Teams can change dramatically in energy, personnel, and tactically from game to game.”
There’s no room for “down time” in the short, competitive season, says Janson. “The league is very competitive from top to bottom and you have to be ready every game.”
Janson has known the folks involved with running the Victory since his high school days. “I coached Sean in soccer his senior year at Evergreen High,” says V2FC owner Barrett Goddard. “We took third in state that year. Bobby Clark was the head coach and I was his assistant coach. Sean won a state championship his senior year in Basketball at Evergreen.”
Janson was with Afenegus at Clark College for 10 seasons before taking the women’s coaching position. They won the NWAACC league title in 2007.
Owner Goddard says Janson has always been around the soccer scene. “Sean and Biniam coached my younger son Cameron at Washington Timbers with Nick Palodichuk when they were U-11s.
Sean and I coach Ridgefield High to a state final appearance before losing 1-0 to Wahluke HS in the championship game. We played that game in front of 5000 people at Camas Doc Harris stadium.”
Janson recently just took over the Executive Director position at Washington Timbers who feature 3,000 players.
“The Washington Timbers and V2FC are finalizing a partnership we hope will be the model for similar relationships with the other youth clubs in our area,” Goddard says. “Director of Club Development Sunny Dulai is working on that with Sean right now.”
